Learn how to support your baby’s movement with The Babies Project – 20 year veterans in the field!

Be with. Be a witness. Be in a relationship. Developmental movement sessions with The Babies Project are based on the belief that little ones learn best when they’re led by their curiosity and supported by a sense of safety and comfort.

Our baby movement classes in NYC are intentionally structured as open exploring time. Sessions focus on giving adults a foundation of information on infant movement and social interaction.

One or more Infant Developmental Movement Educators (IDMEs) are available to support the little ones in their process.

Expert teachers cover topics about infants that will particularly interest parents and caregivers such as:

  • Baby’s movement development
  • Philosophy and perspective
  • Questions that might come up during class
  • Walking/crawling and what to expect

Discussion includes principles such as:

  • balancing extension with flexion and activity with rest
  • the value of “small falls”
  • prioritizing the process of learning rather than achieving a particular skill on a timeline.

In its classic format, The Babies Project is open to families with babies from newborn to early walking, and multiple caregivers are welcome. We have found that this all-ages, one-room schoolhouse format fosters community and a generative learning environment.

What is Infant Developmental Movement?

Babies Project was created in 2017 by Sarah Barnaby and Amy Matthews, who are certified Infant Developmental Movement Educators (IDMEs) trained through the School for Body-Mind Centering. Our work (and play) is inspired by the principles of Body-Mind Centering® and Infant Developmental Movement Education.

Class is conducted in English. We recommend it for English speaking adults. Any number of adults are welcome to attend!

What do parents think about The Babies Project & Infant Developmental Movement?

I’m looking for an entertainment-based class for babies in NYC – is this the right class?

This class is less of an entertainment class and more an informational class for adults. While the babies are certainly enjoying themselves in the child-led environment that Sarah from The Babies Project sets up, there is no direct or planned engagement of the babies. There are no songs, bubbles, or “trying to get babies to do certain things” overtly. Kids at Work has other classes that are more entertainment focused for babies.
