Toddler Music Class Jam Session 12 mos - 4 years

Yes.  Jam Sessions Toddlers depends on our adult participation!  Unlike other music classes which are more of a performance, at Kids at Work music our teachers engage adults and children in the room to create music together and move together!  The more you participate, the more your child will learn.

Toddlers and preschoolers often learn peripherally, and do NOT need to be sitting or standing still and watching the teacher in order to be learning and absorbing information. As adults, we often engage in music and almost never are actually looking at the performer! We strongly encourage children to move (walk around, etc) whenever they want, and also to engage with each other, as all our classes are about socialization!

Never. Due to our small class size and trained professional teachers, we NEVER need to use amplification. Amplification implies that adults should talk, rather than participate. When there is no amplification, it allows our teachers to hold the attention of everyone in the room – including parents. We need everyone to be keyed into what is going on! Amplification is also over-stimulating and confusing for children, who may need to adjust to a new space.

At Kids at Work NYC, we value material that is “off the beaten path.” This includes songs you may not have heard before. We also choose material that is in different tonalities, including minor keys and various “foreign sounding” modes as well.

Our musicians vary their set lists! Set lists include:

• songs without guitar
• songs with guitar
• songs with no pitch (“chants”)
• call and response
• songs with small fine motor movement
• story-songs
• songs with large movement

We encourage everyone in music class to get up and move their body during the songs with large movement.

Before our goodbye song, our teachers prepare a “jam song” which includes many different types of high quality instruments for the babies to enjoy, and for grown-ups to sing along.

Teachers also may slot in parachute activities, pitched chimes, our drum collection, our huge gathering drum, and even bubbles! While each baby music class contains the same general routine and flow, the material varies completely from week to week!

The music teachers at Kids at Work are accomplished singer-guitarists.  Guitar is essential to providing chordal structure to our song selections. Students in toddler and preschool music classes, will always have the experience of a guitar in their classroom!  During class, we also use 100% silk scarves, egg shakers, pitched chimes, drums, rhythm sticks, pitched chimes, and a large collection of high quality mixed instruments.  All instruments used in music classes are of the highest quality, and are completely sanitized between classes. 

All objects and instruments that the children come into contact are sanitized in the following manner between classes, thanks to our wonderful teaching staff:  1/  Wiped down with child-safe soapy water and microfiber cloth AND 2/  Sprayed with department of health approved “food surface safe” sanitizer spray which contains .29% bleach.  3/  Left to air dry for a 3 minute virus “kill time”.  All large motor objects and foam mats are also cleaned in the same manner between classes.  Our classroom floors and easel area are dust mopped and wet mopped between every single class.   Walls and doors are cleaned and sanitized bi-weekly. 

Why do we use a solution containing bleach?  Our bleach solution, which contains only .29% bleach, is the same solution that restaurants use to sanitize surfaces that food comes into contact with.  Sanitizers marketed towards babies such as babyganics or honest brand do NOT kill viruses such as COVID, RSV, flu etc.  

We learned a lot about sanitizing during COVID, when we were open throughout fall 2020 and all of 2021-2022.  Since our objects come into contact with multiple babies per day, our sanitizer is the safest way to keep your child (and all adults) healthy.  

You are more than welcome to grab a wipe and wipe off any excess sanitizer before your child comes into contact with any of our objects!  All objects are dry when they come into contact with students.
